Mint for Soothing Digestion

At this time of year, it’s common to overindulge in foods that are rich and harder to digest than what you’re used to eating. This typically leads to more digestive discomfort- gas, bloating, reflux, or even stomach pain, especially with CF.

Last week we learned about the wonders of ginger for both immunity and digestion. Well, there’s another plant-based remedy for your tummy and it’s name is “mint.”

Mint is an herb that has been used for centuries to soothe indigestion and upset stomach. The remedies that grandma told you about can sometimes be just as effective as an over the counter remedy- before there was Pepto Bismol, there was just the “pep” (peppermint that is!)

Science has shown that peppermint oil is useful as a remedy for indigestion, symptoms of irritable bowel and even for preventing feelings of nausea following surgery. Peppermint works by relaxing the muscles of the digestive tract and reduces inflammation.

You can apply peppermint essential oil topically and massage around your stomach or, if you have a high quality brand, you can add it to recipes, to your drinking water or tea.

As an added benefit, peppermint oil helps support clear airways and gives you a burst of energy and mental clarity when inhaled.

Peppermint is the ultimate multi-tasker for CF.
