Cacao fo Heart and Lung Health

Yesterday, I did a Facebook Live all about the benefits of dark chocolate. Check it out HERE

I mentioned that raw cacao is minimally processed and, therefore, retains the highest level of beneficial nutrients. To get the highest quality, make sure your chocolate choice contains 70-85% cacao. The higher the cacao content, the healthier the chocolate. In addition, beware of packaged cocoa or other chocolate products with the words, “processed with alkali,” as this processing destroys the nutrients you hope to get from your chocolate.

One more important benefit: cacao contains a compound called theobromine, which has been found to be helpful in relaxing the airways to support increased air flow.

So, the great news is that eating the right kind of high-quality chocolate is beneficial when you have CF. Don’t reach for the Kit-Kats and Snickers next time you have a chocolate craving- make sure to go for a quality dark chocolate bar instead.
