Top 5 Foods for Digestive Health

It seems like almost everyone I talk to has some digestive complaint. It’s really not surprising since here are so many factors that affect digestion- are you stressed while eating, are you chewing enough, are you eating on the run, what food choices are you making, and so on.

While it’s important eat in a calm environment if possible and chew your food thoroughly, there are some foods you can include in your routine that can support healthier digestion and fewer complaints.

Here are my top 5:

Fermented foods- these foods, like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and kefir, are rich in probiotics that can both fortify the lining of your digestive tract and improve your immunity.

Chia seeds-these little seeds are rich in omega 3 fats and fiber. The healthy fat helps reduce inflammation in the intestines, while the fiber helps prevent constipation. When chia seeds are soaked, they become mucilaginous, meaning they turn into a gel-like substance. This literally pulls the “stuff” through your digestive system.

Applesauce- apples are high in polyphenols and are very soothing to the gut (especially the cooked ones). They also contain both insoluble fiber and a type of soluble fiber called pectin which acts as a pre-biotic. Pre-biotics feed the good bacteria in your gut to support their growth, and in the process they strengthen your immune and digestive health.

Bone Broth-in general, broth is an easy to digest food that is also hydrating to the body. Bone broth is especially healthy since it contains amino acids that help heal and repair the gut and even improve the flow of digestive “juices.” Choose organic is possible for the highest quality broth.

Mint-this beautiful spice helps relax intestinal muscles to reduce spasms and pain. It also relieves bloating and gas and is often used to fight symptoms of IBS. Peppermint essential oil, like this one is a great way to get the same relief if fresh mint is not available.

Try adding these foods to your diet more often to support a healthier gut.
